Religion, Tourism and Pilgrimage
Termin: 2-5 July 2015

Tematyka konferencji:
Since the 1990s a growing body of academic research has explored the intimate, sometimes contested, relationship between religion and tourism in the context of pilgrimage. Some scholars have deployed the category of religious tourism to explore the hybrid forms of meanings and action generated by this relationship. This panel seeks to locate this relationship within a transnational frame. We invite papers which will delineate the category of religious tourists and other types of religiously-motivated tourists, identify holy sites and draw attention to numerous other contemporary issues requiring additional research. We will also address both sides of the religion-tourism transnational connection:
• supply, stemming from the large number of major tourist destinations that have been developed over the years due largely to their association with sacred people, places, and events; and
• demand, fuelled by visitors, who embody the complex and dynamic intersection between spirituality, religiosity, and tourism.
